National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) is the national governing body for Lifesaving and Lifeguarding and the leading drowning prevention organisation in the UK. The RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the United Kingdom and Ireland and is a recruitment requirement for a number of jobs within the leisure industry from Pool Lifeguard to Centre Manager. This qualification is also recognised internationally so you can use it at a number of places abroad if you are thinking of working in summer camps.
The NPLQ course duration is 36 hours and is split over 3 units; The course comprises of physical training and theoretical classroom work, followed by a practical in-water and out-of-water assessment on pool rescue, first aid, CPR and lifesaving skills.
The qualification is internationally recognised and is incorporated on the Qualifications Framework at Level 2. The NPLQ is valid for 2 years from the date of issue and a further 20 hours of on-going training and competency assessment must be completed before a lifeguard can renew their qualification prior to the expiry of their existing award.
- Be 16 years of age at the time of taking the NPLQ assessment;
- Be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:-
- Jump / dive into deep water
- Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water.
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the floor of the pool
- Climb out unaided without ladder / steps and where the pool design permits
National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches
This course assists those with responsibility for supervising swimming groups and activities identify hazards, prevent accidents and take appropriate emergency action where required. This course is accredited by Lifesavers and the Royal Lifesaving Society and is recognised by Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), Swimming Teachers Association (STA), Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) and the Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches (ISTC)
The course is aimed at anyone who teaches or coaches programmed swimming activities and would also benefit any prospective swimming teachers. You do not require any previous lifesaving experience to train for this award but you must confidently be able to swim 20 metres on your front and back and be able to learn a variety of skills.
The Rookie Lifeguard programme is the junior award scheme of the Royal Lifesaving Society which is fantastic fun and is specifically aimed towards youngsters between the ages of
8-15 years of age
As a Rookie you will learn vital lifesaving skills to help you save yourself and know what to do if others get into difficulty in the water or if somebody stops breathing. The awards contain survival, rescue and sport skills as well as life support and water safety element.
The Rookie programme is divided into 3 stages:- Bronze, Silver and Gold and at each stage there are three badges and numerous other special awards you can work towards.
On-going additional Lifeguard Training
We can provide additional NPLQ training as recommended by the RLSS/ IQL for lifeguards who need to top up their training hours or require a renewal or competency assessment.
